In the late nineties, after a thorough process of investigation and diagnosis of the situation of water resources in Central America, Central American Water Tribunal began to serve multiple queries relating to threats of ecosystems, pollution from mining, resource usurpation water, among others. This court would be formally established in 1998.
In 2000, the Central American Water Tribunal met in San Jose, Costa Rica for the first time and at that time were treated 10 cases around the isthmus of Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua presented 2 disputes by country while Honduras and Guatemala was a case for each country. It generated an intense debate that was manifested in more than 115 articles that addressed the issue.
