FORUM: open pit mining in Latin America:
Experiences and Alternatives for Water Justice.
The international quote for precious metals has motivated and accelerated increase in mining activity, not only in the traditional mining countries (Mexico, Chile and Peru) but also in Central American countries that now experiment a boom in the precious metal mining industry, mainly in the form of open mining.
Close to one fourth of the cases presented to the TLA in its eleven years of existence are related to situations where extracting industries participate. Of these cases, two were from South America (Chile and Peru), one from Nicaragua, two from Mexico, two from Honduras, one from Guatemala, and one involved three Central American countries (Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala).
Importantly, this Tribunal alone has emitted more than a dozen verdicts related to this type of productive activities. In view of this high number of cases it was considered appropriate to develop a workshop with the aim to discuss and analyze the different characteristics of this kind of projects departing from the different experiences in Latin America.
